Hydrogen truck momentum builds as early trials expand and coordinated infrastructure projects shape Europe's zero emission future
11 Dec 2025

Europe’s freight sector is moving from concept to early deployment of hydrogen-powered trucks as manufacturers, fleet operators and policymakers align around pilot schemes and planned corridors intended to support long-distance decarbonisation.
Truckmakers and technology groups are advancing hydrogen systems through limited commercial trials rather than large-scale production. Daimler Truck is pursuing both battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell platforms, saying that broader series production of hydrogen models is expected later this decade, with some timelines extending beyond 2029. Executives argue that any transition must reflect operational realities for freight carriers seeking fast refuelling and long range once infrastructure is in place.
Co-ordinated projects are emerging to develop cross-border hydrogen routes. Industry body Hydrogen Europe points to rising collaboration among vehicle makers, energy suppliers and national authorities, although refuelling capacity remains sparse. Station construction is gaining momentum through EU funding programmes and regional initiatives intended to close critical gaps. Analysts describe the sector as entering a phase in which investment decisions, supply-chain expansion and customer guarantees will shape the pace of adoption.
Bosch, a significant supplier of fuel-cell systems, reflects the cautious optimism in the market. Executives report growing interest from logistics groups taking part in pilot schemes and early trials. They add that wider use will depend on scaled hydrogen production and a more extensive station network, both now central to European policy efforts.
Key hurdles persist, including high hydrogen costs and investor calls for clearer long-term regulation. But joint ventures, infrastructure partnerships and EU-supported deployment plans indicate that Europe is preparing for a broader shift in freight transport.
The coming years will show how hydrogen fits within the region’s transport mix. If infrastructure grows and costs fall as expected, hydrogen could move from a niche solution to a more established part of Europe’s long-haul decarbonisation strategy.
