Batteries Surge as Europe’s Bus Market Tips Electric

Battery electric buses surge across Europe as transit agencies favor fast rollout and lower risk, while hydrogen remains a niche but evolving option

Europe’s clean transport race is no longer a slow burn. It has reached a turning point, and the momentum is clear. Battery electric buses are moving from trials to everyday service, reshaping how cities think about zero emission transit.

The pace is striking. In the first nine months of 2025, Europe registered 8,051 battery electric buses above eight tons. That already tops the total for all of 2024. Transit agencies are making a practical choice, backing technologies that scale quickly and fit within existing systems.

This shift is changing the role of hydrogen. Fuel cell buses still matter, but they are becoming a targeted solution rather than a default one. They perform best on long routes, in harsh climates, or where charging time is scarce. For dense urban networks, battery electric buses often win on simplicity alone.

Hydrogen suppliers are pushing back against the idea that the window is closing. A high profile example is the expanded partnership between Hyundai Motor Group and Air Liquide, which aims to build a full hydrogen chain from production to fueling. The pitch is straightforward. Vehicles cannot succeed without reliable infrastructure and predictable operations.

Procurement strategies are evolving alongside the technology. Transit authorities are moving past experimentation and focusing on risk. Battery electric fleets benefit from familiar power grids and the ability to invest in stages. Hydrogen projects can offer strong performance, but they usually demand larger upfront commitments, which can slow decisions when budgets are tight.

That reality raises the pressure on hydrogen specialists such as Ballard. To stay competitive, they must prove that fuel cell buses can be financed, fueled, and maintained with the same ease as battery electric models.

The market itself is not shrinking. Europe’s push for cleaner cities continues to accelerate, and there is room for more than one solution. The next winners will be those that deliver confidence, clarity, and speed, while turning ambitious climate goals into buses that run on time every day.
