UK-based energy company GeoPura has launched a new hydrogen power unit designed to replace diesel generators at off-grid sites across Europe, marking a step forward in efforts to decarbonise temporary power supply.

The HPU2, a second-generation hydrogen power unit, offers five times the output of its predecessor and produces no emissions during operation. It is aimed at sectors such as construction, live events and film production, where reliable off-grid power has traditionally depended on diesel.

“This is about more than clean energy, it’s about dependable, flexible power where diesel used to dominate,” said Andrew Cunningham, GeoPura’s chief executive. “With HPU2, we’re offering a real alternative that scales with our customers’ needs.”

The unit integrates hydrogen fuel cell technology with battery storage and a modular system architecture, enabling operators to deploy individual units or link several together to meet multi-megawatt demands. GeoPura offers a managed service model that includes hydrogen delivery, installation and on-site operation.

The company is backed by strategic partners including Siemens Energy and Canadian fuel cell maker Ballard. It has secured significant investment to expand production and plans to deploy thousands of units over the coming decade. Clients such as Netflix and the BBC have already used the technology. GeoPura is also exploring new markets in North America and the Middle East.

Despite the technology’s potential, challenges remain. The cost of green hydrogen, produced using renewable electricity, remains high and infrastructure to support widespread deployment is still limited across Europe.

However, tightening emissions regulations and growing demand for clean power are strengthening the case for hydrogen. “GeoPura is turning hydrogen into a practical, scalable solution for today’s energy challenges,” said an analyst at Clean Energy Europe.

The company’s latest unit signals increasing momentum behind hydrogen-based energy as governments and industries seek to meet net-zero commitments and reduce reliance on fossil fuels in temporary and mobile power applications.
