INNOVATION
Solaris and Wrightbus chose Ballard's FCmove-SC within 24 hours of each other, a convergence that may define European hydrogen bus procurement.
14 May 2026

Within 24 hours in early May 2026, two of Europe’s significant hydrogen bus manufacturers made the same technology choice. Solaris of Poland and Wrightbus of Northern Ireland both selected Ballard Power Systems’ FCmove-SC fuel cell engine for their next-generation platforms. Coincidence, perhaps. More likely, a signal.
The FCmove-SC is Ballard’s ninth-generation transit engine, first shown at Busworld Brussels in October 2025. It delivers 30 percent more end-of-life power than its predecessor and achieves 25 percent better volumetric power density through integrated power electronics. Projected service life approaches 25,000 operating hours, a figure that matters greatly to operators calculating total cost of ownership against battery-electric alternatives.
The commercial logic behind both selections is similar. Solaris controls roughly half of Europe’s deployed hydrogen bus base, with approximately 277 of 558 hydrogen bus registrations on the continent in 2025. Extending its existing Ballard supply agreement through 2029 reduces procurement risk while locking in a technology roadmap. Wrightbus, integrating the engine into its StreetDeck Hydroliner Gen 3.0 for 2027 production, gains access to a platform with an established performance record.
Shared supplier relationships across competing manufacturers can accelerate cost reduction through volume and simplify the fragmented certification landscape that has slowed public tender processes. Ballard’s installed fleet of more than 2,200 buses has accumulated over 300 million kilometres at 98 percent availability, providing the performance baseline both companies are betting on. The simultaneous selections suggest that, for urban and regional transit, the technology validation phase may be drawing to a close.
